A To Z Theme Reveal: Text Speak

atoz-theme-reveal-2016 v2

You know how I like procrastinating? Well, I did that again. This time it was for the April A to Z Challenge theme reveal, obviously. Since you’ve been waiting on pins and needles all day long, I’ll cut to the chase and get to the reveal.

This year my theme is text speak, which will mostly be acronyms with a little other text slang thrown in.

Before you type “WTF” in the comments below, allow me to explain, and then you may proceed with the WTFing.

Each day, I’ll take a different text acronym and use it as the basis for my post. For example, with “LOL” I’ll do a post on something that makes me laugh out loud. Or maybe I’ll write about something that’s mildly amusing that doesn’t quiteΒ make me LOL, since people don’t seem to truly be LOLing while they’re typing LOL.

Now you’re probably wondering whether there will be any sexting. I hate to disappoint, but there won’t be.

While I have a lot of ideas churning, feel free to leave any acronyms you’d like to see me write about in the comments below. If I use your suggestion, I’ll do the showing the blog love thing and link to your page.

Now, excuse me while I go shred my English degree, which I’m pretty sure is flipping me off for contributing to ruining our fine language.

  1. For awhile, when people no longer paid per character, my mother was still abbrvting. fcking. evthing. n such a rndm way i felt i was decoding secret messages and she’d just make up her own acronyms. Can you imagine?

Oh man. we have one at work that definitely sounds like (for those outside of my field) we are constantly discussing male body parts. That takes some getting used to for sure!

Awesome theme, looking forward to seeing it in action LOL (best I could come up with there)

This got me wondering about the history of text acronyms since I sort of feel like FUBAR and WTF come from either movies about the military or the military itself? Maybe? Maybe not. Looking forward to following along! (Coming from the A to Z theme reveal list as another late announcer. Heh.)

  4. Great idea! I’m really looking forward to reading your posts, especially since I’m terrible with acronyms! I used to think LOL meant “lots of laughs.” And p.s. – I’m doing the A to Z Challenge this year too. I think you were the one who suggested it to me πŸ™‚ So, thanks!

  5. I abhor LOL – I know someone who attaches it to every single comment they make on texts, e-mails, Facebook and even in person – as if I can’t look at her face and know whether or not she finds the situation funny. And people use it when it is not even remotely funny. ARG!
I think I will be educated this month.

  6. Just when I felt like I was finally catching up with text speak, I got pregnant and downloaded a baby/parenting app. The discussion boards are full of acronyms and half of the time I had no idea what was going on. DH, AF, TWW…and so many more!

  7. This is a great idea! I can’t wait to read your posts. If I think of any good ones I’ll be sure to post ’em! (I very rarely use text slang, even in texts; I even spell out “you” instead of the ever-popular “u”!)

  8. Your post got a literal (not figurative) LOL from me!
As a PB (picture book) writer, I’m often using texting speak when talking to my SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) peeps and CPs (Critique Partners). We have the popular BIC (butt in chair) or the longer BICHOK (butt in chair, hands on keyboard) and tons of others, but I’m trying to KISS (Keep it simple, stupid) with this comment. πŸ™‚
